Learning Summary
Anticipating and preparing for palliative emergencies in home care results in better patient and family-centred care. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of potential emergencies helps providers determine the appropriate clinical interventions, and better prepare and support patients and their caregivers.
A helpful way to remember the 5 common palliative care emergences is using the 5 B’s:
Breathing (Dyspnea)
Bleeding (Hemorrhage)
Balance (Hpercalcemia)
Brain (Seizures)
Blockages (Spinal Cord Compression and Superior Vena Cava Obstruction)
Care plans for managing emergency situations in the home include the patient and their caregiver by:
- Recognizing the patient’s wishes and care goals
- Knowing the benefits, limitations, consequences of treatment options
- Empowering caregivers in their role as care partners
